CATHERINE BROWN

Catherine was born and raised in the Collingwood area. During her school years, she developed a passion for the piano, taking lessons locally for thirteen years. After completing a Bachelor of Education at Lakeshore Teacher’s College, Catherine began a teaching career that lasted 33 years, both in the elementary and secondary panels. While teaching and raising a family, she completed a B.A. in Religion and Culture from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Vocal Music Specialist from York University. In the latter half of her teaching career, Catherine presented many workshops for teachers in Ontario, specifically for teaching music in the classroom.

Catherine joined First Presbyterian Church in 1971 and became actively involved with the highschool youth program. In the early 80’s, she accompanied choirs and in 1987, was hired as the Choir Director for the Church. Under her direction, new musical groups have started, such as the Outreach Singers and the instrumental enPSALMble. She has lead the musical portion of the annual summer Vacation Bible Camp for 14 years. A highlight of Catherine’s church career was her trip to Hungary and Romania, teaching Christian music to seminary students there.

Catherine and her husband Jonathan enjoy spending time with their three children and four grandchildren. Catherine likes to travel, go biking, attend concerts, and of course, do the daily crosswords.
